What Is Alpha?

Got questions about life?  Everyone should have the chance to explore the Christian faith, ask questions, and share their point of view.  Alpha provides everyone this opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. The Alpha course usually meets once a week for 10 weeks, including a powerful one-day or weekend getaway. Sessions begin with a meal, followed by a short talk, and time to discuss the topic where everyone is welcome to contribute their opinions.

Questions might include: Who is Jesus? What does the cross mean to you? What do you think God's plan is for you?

Courses vary in size, from one small group meeting in a home, to hundreds of people in a church. Some courses are held over morning coffee or during a lunch hour. Most are evening courses, typically lasting 2 hours. No two Alphas look the same, but they generally have three key things in common: food, a talk, and good conversation.

Who Is Alpha For?

All are welcome!  We do not assume any background knowledge of or belief in Christianity.  You are free to discuss as much or as little as you wish.  Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that is life changing.  Others come for the close, long-lasting friendships that are built during the Alpha course.

Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome.

How Much Will It Cost?

There is no charge for attending the Alpha course. Some courses might ask for a small contribution to help cover meal and the weekend retreat costs.

What to expect...

First up...

Food - Whether it's a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch-up over coffee and dessert, food has a way of bringing people together.  It's no different at Alpha.  We always start with food because it's a great way to encourage community and get to know each other.

Then...

Talk - Generally 30 minutes long, the talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation.  They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith?

Followed by...

Discussion - The most important part of Alpha, the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic.  There's no obligation to say anything, and there's nothing you can't say.  It's an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly, and open environment.

FAQ...

Do I have to talk and share my thoughts?

No. There is no pressure to speak during the discussion time.  You may remain silent if you wish.

How long is an Alpha session?

Sessions last 2 hours.  They go by quickly.  We start on time and always end on time.

What if I go for a week or two and don't want to continue?

If you don't want to come after a week or two, no worries.  We will not call you or bother you if you don't come back.

Do I stay with my small group throughout the course?

Yes!  Staying with your small group gives everyone a chance to build and deepen friendships that last long after the Alpha course is over.

Is there childcare?

Childcare will be provided for the Thursday evening Young Adult Session only.

I've got more questions. Who can I contact?

Julie Walker is our Alpha Coordinator at Our Lady.  She can be reached at (614)332-5786 or jWalker@OurLadyOfPerpetualHelp.net
